Drug Defaults

The formulary enables you to add both dosage and prescribed quantity defaults to drugs.

Dose and quantity defaults can also be added to products via Tags – doses and quantities set at this level must be indication specific, for example, a dose for UTI over 3 days associated with the relevant UTI tag.

An item may have multiple practice default doses associated with it, which are separated by age/sex range.

Default information can be added from the Gemscript defaults or recorded manually.

Note - A default prescribed quantity must be associated with a default dose.
  1. From the Formulary double click on the drug you wish to set the defaults for.
    The dosage screen displays.

The top right corner includes a link to Drug Information, see - Drug Information.

  2. The dosage details need to be associated with an Age/Sex range.
    1. Select Age/sex ranges +.
The Add Age/sex range pop-up displays.

    2. Use the drop-down menu to choose either.
      • All
      • Between
        For example, 16y and 65y.
      • Over
      • Under
        For example, under 3y.
    3. Enter the age in the format, XXy for years or XXm for months.

    4. Select the Sex.
      • All
      • Male
      • Female
    5. Select OK to save the Age/Sex settings.
The view refreshes with the Age/Sex information, the drug class populates and Add Gemscript defaults activates.
  3. To populate with the Gemscript defaults, select Add Gemscript defaults.

If the defaults exist, these automatically populate.
  4. To enter the defaults manually:
    1. Enter the Dosage, for example, 1 three times daily.
Note - Dosage codes are not converted.
    2. Enter the Quantity.
If available the pack sizes and costs display to the right.
    3. Optionally, enter any Notes to patient.
    4. If required, enter the Dosage Duration.
  5. Select Save to finish.

Dosage Information

As a drug may have several dosage protocols, the details shown may change depending on how it is being viewed.

  • If a drug is accessed via its tag, then the tag default dosage displays.
  • If a drug is accessed via a direct search, then the practice default dosage displays.
  • If there is no practice default dosage, the drug dictionary default dosage displays if there is one.
